Kim has always known the positive power of music and has played piano since she was 8. After deciding that performance was not the right career path, she switched schools from University of Miami music school and finished her Associates in Arts degree at Florida Keys Community College.
Kim got into the piano industry after rebuilding (with some help) the entire engine on her 1969 VW beetle. That experience was what made her think she could be a piano mechanic! After a year of basic training in Atlanta, her piano career took root and she has since built clientele in several cities and become an extremely skilled technician. Most of her training came from her first big break at PianoWorks, as well as her involvement with the Piano Technicians Guild. Although she enjoyed the experience of owning her own business in Louisiana, she has now landed in Charlotte and is even more motivated to be a part of the future of this great profession. Kim is arguable one of the best technicians in the Carolinas!
What is your first memory of the piano?
"The house we rented when I was a kid had a piano in it, a Wurlitzer spinet. I started learning on that piano (from 8 years old to high school). When the landlords evicted us because they wanted to sell the house, they didn't want to get rid of the piano. My mom (who raced sailboats in college) sold her boat to buy me a used Yamaha upright."
What was a job you had before being a piano technician that you enjoyed?
"My first job was working with my "uncle and aunt" (not blood related, but close family friends) in their marine hydraulics business, installing and repairing trap-pullers and wash-down systems in commercial fishing boats."
What is the best advice you have received?
"Everything changes, be present."
What do you want people to remember about you?
"Hopefully that I made them feel happy!"
If you could own any piano, which one would it be?
"A Shigeru Kawai, Bosendorfer 200, or a rebuilt Steinway M. :-)"
What do you do in your free time?
"Play music! Hike, Aikido, cook with my wonderful fiance, dream up amazing travel plans and swim in the ocean whenever I can"
If you could live anywhere else, where would it be?
"On a 40 foot sailboat anchored off the Florida Keys"
What do you typically listen to while driving in your car or doing shop repairs?
"It varies but some of my go-tos are: ACDC, Natalia LaFourcada, Jimmy Cliff, Ahmad Jamal, Ani Difranco, Otis Redding , Joon Moon, The Darkness, Trombone Shorty, Glass Animals...the list goes on"
What was the best concert you ever attended?
"That question is way too hard"
What's the worst pet you have ever owned?
"My sister had a pretty awful chow mix that bit me once (don't tell her, but I never liked that dog)"
What piano service or repair do you find really fun to do?
"Replacing key bushings"
